Rabin goes Out to Lunch the first Wednesday of every month. A minimum donation of $3.00 per person is required and donor credit is given. Reservations are required and must be made by the Sunday prior to the lunch date! You also must call if you need to cancel, since the restaurant will need a final count. We request that the restaurant provide separate checks for everyone. However, if they are unable to do this, then the total bill, including tax and tip, will be divided equally among all those present. You will be notified if this should be the case. Call Marcia Gurian at (480) 838-1226 or email her at mgurian@att.net for information and reservations. . .
Remember you can pay in advance for Out to Lunch for the year, or for a few months at a time, by paying a minimum of $3.00 per lunch for the next 12 lunches ($36 or more) and receive full donor credit for this donation. That way you will have 12 entries in the drawing for the certificate even if you miss a luncheon. Send your check made out to Hadassah to Marcia Gurian. |

EDUCATION: ![]() |
Hadassah
and the World through the
Decades – The 1950’s
As Hadassah celebrates its Centennial year, we continue our stroll down memory lane along our Centennial path to glimpse, decade by decade, some of the highlights in Hadassah history. The 1950’s were a quieter time. In 1954, television thrives. The Supreme Court orders school desegregation in 1955. Alaska becomes the 49th state and Hawaii the 50th in 1959. Watson and Crick discover DNA in 1953. The USSR launches Sputnik, the first artificial satellite in 1957. Fantastic “Hadassah Women of the 1950’s”ETTA ROSENSOHN: Hadassah National President 1952-1953 Etta Lasker Rosensohn was born in Galveston, Texas, in 1885. Etta was involved in many social and health-related organizations during the first half of the century. Chairman of the Department of Service to the Foreign Born at the National Council of Jewish Women from 1919 to 1930, she also headed its Naturalization and Immigration Service for six years, and founded its newspaper, The Immigrant. Etta did some of her most important work as a leader of Hadassah, serving as a member of the National Board for more than two decades. In addition to her time as president, she served as chairman of the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO). REBECCA SHULMAN: Hadassah National President 1953-1956 Rebecca Beldner Shulman was born in Vienna in 1896 and came to the United States as a young girl. Rebecca became active in Hadassah, and held virtually every other major office on the National Board. As a trained nurse, she took particular interest in the medical aspects of Hadassah’s work, serving as chairman of the building fund for the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, and as chairman of the Hadassah Medical Organization. As a Zionist, Rebecca became concerned with the urgent issue of a Jewish national homeland during World War II. In 1945, at Hadassah’s national convention, she called on the organization’s 150,000 members to take up the struggle for Jewish statehood. MIRIAM FREUND ROSENTHAL: Hadassah National President 1956-1960 Dr. Miriam Freund Rosenthal served as Hadassah’s 11th national president. In the early 1960s, she persuaded Marc Chagall to create the 12 magnificent stained glass windows that now live in the Synagogue at Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem. Miriam served as editor of Hadassah Magazine, as national education chairman, national vocational education chairman, national Youth Aliyah chairman, and national Zionist affairs chairman. | CARDS
AND CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE: ![]() |
You can purchase cards in any quantity from Shoshana Roller, Cards and Certificates chair. She also has a $5 certificate available. Certificates in larger amounts, starting at $18 (Chai Certificate) can be purchased through Susan Fox who can imprint it with your greeting and name. 100% donor credit is given for all card and certificate purchases. You need to order your cards and certificates through Rabin in order to get donor credit and free mailing. Keep in mind that tree certificates do not have to be used solely for memorials. They make great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and other simchas. There is also a new In Memory Of certificate, the same size as the tree certificate, which can be customized. The message reads: May this memorial gift bring solace to those who mourn as it brings new hope and good health to people in Israel and around the world. It’s printed in blue ink on white card stock and will be personalized in matching blue ink. Very professional looking! The cost is $15, but Rabin earns more quota money on this certificate than on the trees.

OUT TO LUNCH CERTIFICATE PROGRAM: When you attend an Out to Lunch event and donate a minimum of $3.00 you will have your name entered into a drawing. Each time we accumulate $500 in Out to Lunch donations, a name will be drawn and a certificate issued in that person’s name. Hadassah will receive the money, Rabin will get quota credit, and you will receive the recognition for that donation. In fact, you may just choose to donate $36.00 or more annually in advance toward Out to Lunch, and automatically have an entry in the drawing each month. A new fiscal year starts June 1, so you can donate then for the coming year. Contact Marcia Gurian for details. |
